Court jails cleric, traditional ruler, seven others for open defecation in Ekiti

Adeosun Abayomi of an Aramoko Magistrates’ Court, on Wednesday, sentenced nine people including a traditional title holder and a Clergy to six months in prison each for open defecation in Ekiti State.

Those convicted are Olaleye Isaac, Ologun Ala, Agboola M, Atoro, Adetoyinbo, Adesoba Sunday, Jacob Taiwo, Titus Ibironke and Olu Obateru, all in Ekiti West Local Government Area of Ekiti state.

The News Agency of Nigeria, (NAN) reports that those convicted were arraigned for various sanitation offences including non-availability of toilet facilities in their houses, non-availability of waste bins, and defecating in the open.

Delivering the judgment, Mr Abayomi lamented the environmental nuisance caused by open defecation.

He, however, gave them options to pay fines ranging from N5,000 to N15,000.

The Magistrate court also issued a bench warrant for the arrest of nine other persons who failed to appear in court for a similar offence.

He ordered the police to present them for prosecution on April 25, 2019.

NAN reports that out of the 18 people arraigned before the Magistrate court by Ekiti Local Government Environmental Health Officers, nine people pleaded guilty to the offences, and were convicted accordingly.

Addressing journalists after the conviction, the chief prosecutor, Ekiti West Local Government, Ebenezer Fashipe, lamented that citizens valued their wealth more than their health.

He assured that the local government would continue to prosecute households without toilets until open defecation was eradicated in the area.

Italian man murders Nigerian prostitute for failing to satisfy him in Italy

An Italian man, Leopoldo Scalici, 41, has been arrested for allegedly murdering a Nigerian prostitute, identified as Benedicta and dumping her body in a ditch.

According to Italian website, Modena Today, Scalici approached Benedicta on the streets of Modena Nord for sex over the weekend.

Benedicta was reportedly killed after the duo had had sexual intercourse and an argument had broken out, which led to Scalici hitting the Nigerian prostitute with a heavy object on the face and head.

It was however speculated that Scalici hit Benedicta because he wasn’t satisfied sexually.

Italian police have detained Scalici, after he voluntarily confessed to the crime.

An autopsy has been scheduled.

No clash between WAEC and JAMB timetables, Oloyede clarifies

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says there is no clash between its timetable and that of the West African Examination Council (WAEC) as being widely speculated and criticised.

Is’haq Oloyede, JAMB registrar, said at an interactive session with editors in Lagos on Tuesday, that there was no basis for such speculation because the organisation was holding annual meetings with the examination bodies to reconcile areas of interest.

“We meet annually with WAEC, NECO and others to reconcile because we have the same target of education development,’’ he said.

He said those attacking him and the system out of ignorance would not succeed in distracting him from pursuing the target of ensuring national development through sound education for Nigerians.

He explained that government slashed the registration fees for candidates from N5,000 based on advice from the Board, an action he said would encourage registration of more candidates for higher education and eventual national development.

Oloyede enumerated various measures inimical to education development, including multiple registrations, abuse of biometric system and other forms of corruption in the system.

The registrar said that JAMB, under his leadership, was determined to clean the system with legitimate approach.

A member of the Board of Trustees of the ACF, who confided in The PUNCH on Tuesday, said the meeting, which would hold on Wednesday (today), would discuss the rising incidence of kidnappings and killings in the North in particular, and the country in general.

The ACF convened the meeting just as the Minister of Defence, Mansur Dan-Ali, indicted some prominent traditional rulers in the North for aiding bandits in the North-West.

Although spokesman for the ACF, Alhaji Muhammad Biu, declined to comment on the allegation against the traditional rulers, he confirmed that the forum’s BOT would meet on Wednesday (today) over the problem of banditry.

In an SMS to one of our correspondents, Biu stated, “We have the BoT meeting tomorrow (Wednesday) to discuss the general insecurity due to kidnappings and insurgency in the country; for now, no comment please.”

But another member of the forum, who issued a statement last week, said the group was concerned that banditry was assuming a dangerous dimension.

“The ACF’s Board of Trustees is meeting tomorrow (Wednesday) and the issue of banditry which has assumed a dangerous dimension will feature prominently during the meeting,” the source said.

The northern body last week raised the alarm over the rising spate of kidnappings and other forms of banditry in some parts of the region.

Biu, who issued a statement on the issue, had said, “The Arewa Consultative Forum and indeed Nigerians are worried by reports of the kidnapping of innocent people along the highways and the frequent attacks on villages by some bandits.

“The kidnappings and attacks on the people, especially along the Kaduna-Abuja Expressway and many villages in Zamfara, Sokoto, Katsina and Kaduna states as well as many parts of the country are cruel, barbaric and inhuman.”

However, in a statement on Tuesday, the Defence minister said the Federal Government had ordered the security agencies to tackle banditry and killings in Zamfara State and the entire North-West geopolitical zone.

He said some top traditional rulers in the communities were helping the bandits to perpetuate criminal activities.

The minister, who did not name the traditional rulers, also accused them of “compromising military operations.”

He warned that the armed forces would go after “any person or group of persons who choose to connive or sympathise with the bandits to perpetuate crimes against law-abiding citizens.”

Offshore workers find love charm done by lady and thrown into sea

A Nigerian man has revealed what he and his crew members saw while working offshore. According to Romeo Nwabueze, they found charm/juju which was allegedly done by a lady on her man and his mother and thrown into the sea.

The lady, identified as Temitope, put a picture of herself and her man, Ramon Abiodun, inside a small wooden casket and did a similar thing for his mother named Baisat. This was purportedly done for them to love her endlessly.

She then added a written incantation to the two caskets before throwing it into the ocean. The incantation reads thus:

“May Abiodun never question whatever Temitope says. May he always give Temitope all the money he makes in his entire life. May everything he works hard to get in life always be given to Temitope, be it car, land house or anything at all. Anything she asks from him must be provided without questioning. May Abiodun never love any other woman again, except Temitope. May he start living with her as husband and wife as from today.”

Mr Jeffrey Mwale has been taken to police by his Inlaw after he was caught on camera feeding his niece with sunlight liquid paste in Lusaka’s Meanwood area.

It is believed Jeff has been feeling the niece with harmful things in the name of food whenever he gets the chance. The parents to the child heard rumours from the house maid on how he treats their child and decided to put up CCTV Cameras in their apartment in order to see exactly what happens.

Hence the baby kept falling sick.

Yesterday Jeff was caught on camera after they left him with a baby deliberately for just 30 minutes

#EndSars resurfaces as a young man is killed by its operatives

SARS operatives in Lagos have allegedly killed a young boy while watching a football match in Lagos, after he was hit by a stray bullet.

According to reports, the sad incident happened Sunday afternoon at Olu Aboderin Street, Onipetesi, Lagos State.

The boy was reportedly watching the just concluded Liverpool FC match .

According to one Emenike, who witnessed the incident, the officers had come to the area to arrest a guy on dreadlocks. He alleged that they started shooting sporadically after the arrest, only for one of the bullets to hit the boy.

The victim was subsequently rushed to the general hospital in Ikeja, where he was confirmed dead.
