Bandits take over parts of Buhari's home state

Aminu Masari, Governor of Katsina State, has lamented the high presence of bandits in some parts of the state.

The Governor, represented by his deputy, Mannir Yakubu, at a stakeholders' forum in the state, told this to Muhammed Adamu, the acting Inspector General of Police (IGP), on Wednesday.

According to the Governor, aside from the presence of bandits, kidnappers also constituted a menace to the state.

“These bandits strike at will, maim at will, destroy lives and property at will. In other parts of the state, we also have kidnappers who not only take people on the road but in the comfort of their homes,” he added, citing the “unfortunate incident of the Governor’s in-law who was taken in the comfort of her home".

He said government officials have met with eight front-line local government chairmen to keep them abreast of the security situation. He also gave the assurance that government would do all possible to see to the final onslaught on the bandits and kidnappers in the state.

The eight LGs are Jibia, Batsari, Safana, Dan-Musa, Faskari, Sabuwa, Dandume and Kankara. Some of the LGs share boundaries with Zamfara State, which is under constant attacks from bandits and kidnappers.

In his remarks, the IGP said he was in the state to look into the security challenges, especially the activities of kidnappers and bandits.

He said the Police needed information on activities of “these miscreants”, noting that the latest strategy of the Police is to take the fight to the kidnappers by identifying them, occupying their location and camps.

Meanwhile, Manir Muazu, the Caretaker Chairman of the Batsari Local Government Area, revealed that bandits killed five people at Garimi/Magaji Ado ward along Jibia/Batsari Road, on Tuesday.

The council boss said the bandits also injured 10 people while shops and vehicles were set ablaze.

Adamu assured the forum that his squad meant business and would flush out the bandits.

I live in Nairobi but I travel 3 - 4 times a year so I do believe that I have some credibility to answer this question.

Airport

Murtala Muhammed International Airport (Lagos) vs. Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (Nairobi): there’s no comparison. JKIA is larger, cleaner and more organized than MMIA. The visa process in JKIA is also easier

Weather

Nairobi’s climate is mild and dry due to high altitude even though it straddles the equator (average is 23° / 14°). Temperatures in Lagos is hot and oppressively humid (average 32° / 24°)

Power

Most Nairobians do not own a generator because it is unnecessary. There are power blackouts but one of more than 4 hours is uncommon and maybe happens 1 - 2 month. Additionally, power is available in the lower income areas. Everyone in Lagos has a generator because power is off more than 50% of the time

Fuel

Nigeria is one of the leading exporter of crude oil but has to import diesel/petrol since their refineries are barely working. For various reasons, there are frequent stockouts of diesel and petrol although to be fair it has improved a lot in the last 2 years. Nairobi has not had a major petrol/diesel stockout in 5 years

Rent

In Nairobi, you pay first month, last month and one month deposit to move into a rental unit. In Lagos, you have to pay 2 years upfront

Environment

Lagos is a concrete jungle without a shred of greenery. Nairobi is the Green City in Sun with a lot of greenery and even a forest (Karura Forest) within the city limits

Traffic

Both Nairobi and Lagos suck equally

Hotels

Because Kenya has no oil, one of the major industries is tourism so there’s been a lot of investment in hotels and all levels. Most international chains have hotels in Nairobi. A few international chains have now a presence in Lagos (for a long time it was pretty much Eko Hotel) so this has improved.

Road infrastructure

Lagos does have better road infrastructure than Nairobi, although Nairobi is catching up with the building of the bypasses

Food

If you are a fan of spicy food and seafood then Lagos is the place to be. Nairobi food can be somewhat bland but this is a very subjective topic. I think there are more restaurants per capita in Nairobi since Kenyans eat out more than Nigerians.

Nightclubs

Lagos has many more higher end nightclubs than Nairobi and Nigerians dress up when they go out. Kenyans are very casual and frankly dress badly. It is common to find most people in a Nairoib club in jeans and sneakers whereas no self respecting Nigerian would roll like that to a club. One major cultural difference is that in Nairobi, women go to nightclubs by themselves or with their buddies and will entertain themselves and buy themselves drinks. This is for both single AND married women. In Lagos, it much less common for women (especially married) to go out by themselves unless accompanied by boyfriend/husband/brother. Also, a Nigerian woman will not pay for her own drink.

Rivers APC crisis: Malami speaks on reversing Supreme Court's decision

The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has denied alleged plot to reverse the Supreme Court judgment on Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

APC was barred from fielding candidates for the 2019 elections in Rivers.

But, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which won most of the elective positions, alleged on Sunday that there was a plot to reverse the court judgment.

PDP fingered Malami as the one, who would mount pressure on the Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Tanko Mohammed, to effect the reversal.

However, dismissing the allegation on Wednesday in Abuja, Malami said the PDP exercised its power of freedom of speech in excess.

Speaking with State House correspondents, he said: “Regarding what was levelled against me by PDP, I think it remains an accusation.

“It has to remain so until proven through a judicial process.

“But, for me, I think it is freedom of speech that has been taken too far.”

Police arrests WikiLeaks founder, Julian Assange

British police have arrested WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange at Ecuador’s embassy in London after his asylum was withdrawn, the police said in a statement Thursday.

Assange has been living at the embassy since 2012 when he sought refuge there.

Without Ifa, there would have been no Google - Ooni of Ife

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, on Wednesday said that the Google originated from the ‘Ifa’ also known as the oracle.

The traditional leader said that without ‘Ifa,’ google would not have been created.

He said this during the press tour of the tourist sites within the ancient city ahead of the Tourism Innovation and Development Innovation Conference (TIDA) slated for April 24.

The theme of the forthcoming conference is:” Impact of Sustainable Tourism Development and Marketing of Tourism Destinations on Host Communities.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that ‘ Odu Ifa’ refers to the verses of the literary corpus that are usually consulted by people who believe in its efficacy before embarking on any project or activity.

It is also a West African religion and system of divination

Mr Ogunwusi said that ‘Ifa’ as a form of divination was all about sourcing for information and knowledge through traditional consultation.

The traditional ruler said that Google could be regarded as the modern way of sourcing for past information and what was likely to happen in the future too.

He said that ‘Ifa’ originated several thousands of years ago and is seen as the voice of the almighty God referred to as “Orisa Oke” which is supreme to other lesser gods.

“Without ‘Ifa’, there could never have been the google, so the google is the modern-day version of ‘Ifa’.

“‘Ifa’ is all about information, getting knowledge from the Almighty God.

“Whenever you search the google for information or knowledge, you are consulting ‘Ifa’; and without ‘Ifa’, there would not have been the google.”

He said that ‘Ifa’ was still relevant in contemporary time, saying that was why people were still consulting the oracle for information and solutions to their problems.

The monarch explained that if the modern day youth and the educated wanted to know the date of any important event, they would search for it from Google.

‘That is part of the functions that Ifa’ does for its believers and followers; that is the truth but it may sound strange,” he said.

The Ooni who is the custodian of the Yoruba culture and tradition called on Nigerians to embrace traditional worships peculiar to their communities.

He said that would not stop them from practising other modern religions.
