Surrender Now Or, Police Warns Dino

The Nigeria Police Force has asked the lawmaker representing Kogi West in the National Assembly, Senator Dino Melaye, to surrender himself for arrest and investigation for attempted culpable homicide.

It stated that the police operatives deployed in his house with an arrest warrant will not leave his Abuja residence until they apprehended him.


The Force spokesman, Jimoh Moshood, said in a statement on Monday that Melaye had repeated spurned several invitations asking him to report for an investigation into the alleged shooting of one Sgt. Danjuma Saliu, attached to 37 Police Mobile Force while on stop-and-search duty along Aiyetoro Gbede, Mopa Road in Kogi State.

He explained that Melaye and his armed thugs shot and injured Saliu who is currently on admission at the Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja.

Police investigators, he said, had invited Melaye through a letter of invitation dated 23rd July, 2018, signed by the Commissioner of Police, Kogi State Police Command, and addressed to the Clerk, National Assembly, Abuja.

Moshood said, “Melaye was asked to report on 26th July, 2018 at the Kogi State Police Command, CIID, Lokoja to answer to a case of criminal conspiracy and attempted culpable homicide against him under investigation in the Kogi State Police Command.

“The claim by the Senate President in the media that the Police did not submit a letter of invitation to the Clerk of the National Assembly is therefore incorrect as can be seen on the attached letter with acknowledgment stamp of the Clerk, National Assembly, Abuja, dated 24 July, 2018.”

The Police also tendered copies of pictures of the injured officer, the invitation letter to Melaye addressed to the Clerk of National Assembly and the medical report from the Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja, confirming the admission of Sgt. Saliu to the hospital for gunshot injury.

Meanwhile, the National Coordinator, Advocate for Peoples’ Rights and Justice, Victor Giwa, has condemned the police siege and move to arrest Melaye, describing it as an abuse of his rights.


The activist in a statement asked the police to follow the proper procedure laid down by the law if the lawmaker was needed to answer to any charges.

He added, “As an organisation, we see the continuous occupation of the residence of Senator Melaye as a gross violation of his right to freedom of movement and personal liberty, as provided in the constitution.

“If the Police need the Senator for any offence or for trial in court, there are proper procedures laid down by the law to follow, anything outside that is persecution. We, therefore, insist that we shall mobilize our allies as civil society to resist any form of intimidation or harassment by the police. An injustice to one is an injustice to all.”

Army Removes Brigade Commander As Boko Haram Captures 8 Towns In Borno

The military high command yesterday removed the Brigade Commander of the Army’s 7 Brigade, Brigadier General Hassan in the aftermath of the Boko Haram takeover of Baga town on the fringes of Lake Chad in northern Borno State.The Brigade is the Nigerian Component of the Multi National Joint Task Force (MNJTF) which also has troops from Chad, Cameroon and Niger. Thiswas even as Monguno town also in northern Borno was, at the time of filing this report, witnessing heavy fighting between Nigerian troops and Boko Haram.

Sources said “hundreds” of Boko Haram fighters armed with RPGs stormed Monguno and engaged the troops manning the military facility in the town in heavy fight. Baga town where the MNJTF headquarters was situated was reportedly taken over by the Abu Mus’ab Albarnawi faction of the Boko Haram on Wednesday, Dec.27 even though the Defence Headquarters in Abuja denied the claim, saying the town was not taken over by the assailants.It added that Nigeria Air Force repelled the Boko Haram invaders of MNJTF headquarters.

But multiple credible military and intelligence sources told the Daily Trust last night that Baga and all the military facilities there were still under Boko Haram occupation.One of the sources added that “thousands of residents” including women and children are still trapped there.“I can assure you that Boko Haram is in control of Baga but there is an ongoing plan to reclaim it,” one of the sources said.“A new commander would be appointed for 7 Brigade very soon to replace General Hassan ahead of massive onslaught by the combined forces of Army, Navy and Air Force to reclaim Baga and many other locations taken over by the Boko Haram,” he said.Another source said, “The situation is not as the military/government are saying. I think the claim that Baga has been restored is to calm the populace and prevent panic movements from other areas.No troop/force has entered Baga since after the attack. However, the military are planning a counter attack soon. The report that it has been reclaimed is in anticipation of success. A new force is being assembled; they include the old ones and new ones being injected,” he said.

Why Baga was taken over

Several reasons have been given as to why Boko Haram took over Baga.These included the withdrawal of support by Chad, whose forces dealt a deadly blow to Boko Haram shortly before and after President Buhari took over before the “contract” was terminated.

“Another problem is overused equipment.  These were the equipment bought by the last regime and have continuously been used since then without replacement,” a source said.“The troops have also overstayed. No soldier is less than 2 years in all the units. It’s not the fault of the Brigade Commander that was removed but the insincerity of the military/political leadership,” he said.

Other towns under Boko Haram occupation

Locals who made it to Maiduguri told the Daily Trust that apart from Baga, other towns and villages under Boko Haram control included Zari, Jilli, Gudumbali, Arege, Kukawa and Metele. “Several towns and villages had been attacked and equipment carted away,” said Mala Modu, a fish merchant who is now in Maiduguri. Other places where the people are living in fear include  Gashigar,Zari, Granda, Gudumbari, Kukawa, Arge, Metele, Alagarnon arewa, Kangarwa, Jilli, Birmari, Mairari,  Mainari, Kuroskauwa, Mil4 and Mil90.

Baga was once occupied by the Boko Haram until few weeks to the 2015 general elections when it was recovered. Ex- President Goodluck Jonathan, who visited the place, promoted all the soldiers that fought in the battle, including late Col. Abu Ali who was later killed by Boko Haram.The present Chief of Operations at Army headquarters, Maj. Gen Lamidi Adeosun received Jonathan in Baga at the time.

Meanwhile, Nigeria Air Force (NAF) yesterday said its Air Task Force [ATF] of Operation Lafiya Dole has neutralized several Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters at their hideout near Baga in Northern Borno State.A statement by Air Force spokesman Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola said the attack was conducted yesterday, 29 December 2018, after a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) platform spotted the terrorists assembled under some trees around the Fish Dam near Baga.

Oba Of Benin Begs Edo Boys To Stop Stealing Girls' Panties

The Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, has warned Nigerian youths to shun money rituals. He spoke on Sunday during a thanksgiving service at the Holy Aruosa Cathedral in Benin to round off the 2018 annual Igue festival celebrations.

He said youths who cling to the illusion that they could become wealthy by killing people or stealing female underwear for ritual purposes would no doubt face the consequence. He added that the behaviour was abominable and alien to Benin customs and tradition.

The monarch interceded for Nigeria and her leaders and urged politicians and youths to shun acts that could undermine free, fair and credible elections in 2019 and also warned politicians to desist from violence and other acts inimical to the electoral process. He cautioned youths not to allow themselves to be used as political thugs to cause mayhem during elections.

Politicians Are Hoarding Cash To Buy Votes In 2019 - Sowore

Omoyele Sowore, presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), says politicians are "hoarding money" to buy votes in the 2019 elections.

He urged the electorate to reject such propositions and vote the right candidates who will make the country great.

He spoke on Sunday at the Apoi Development Front (ADF) 2018 end of the year party held at Helena hotels in Akure, the Ondo State capital.

The AAC presidential candidate tasked the electorate to challenge those "money-bag politicians" interested in political offices with critical questions geared towards the growth and development of their areas.

According to him, the 2019 general election will determine if Nigerians are "ready for a revolutionary change that will birth a new Nigeria, or if they still want to continue experiencing the bad governance of both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)".

Sowore stressed that he is running for the number one seat of the country to correct the wrongs that have been made by past leaders, noting that politics should not be based on ethnicity or tribe.

"Let us always demand for what we want from these politicians anytime they come to us seeking our votes becuase we need development. I am not running for the seat of the presidency becuase I am from Apoi land, but becuase I am a good son of the community and I'm not ashamed to say that I am from Apoi land," he said.

"I urge us all to join hands together and vote for the person that would help and develop our country-home; someone who can give us schools, hospitals, electricity, and give our children free education. Our politicians, and mostly those in the APC government, are keeping money meant for the public and the development of this country because they want to use it to buy votes in 2019.

"These politicians are not giving you money, becuase they are keeping it to buy your votes, but the one that I would rather use to buy your votes, I will donate here for you to develop our Apoi land and the association."

APC Federal Lawmaker Is Dead.

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has described the death of Abayomi Ayeola, a member of the House of Representatives, as sad and shocking.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Mr Aiyeola (APC-Ibeju Lekki Federal Constituency) died on Sunday at a private hospital in Lagos, after a brief illness.

The two-term lawmaker had clinched the APC ticket at the party’s last primary to seek a third term in the federal lower chamber come 2019.

He was the leader of the Lagos caucus at the Federal House of Representatives until his death.

Confirming the lawmaker’s demise to NAN, Assistant Publicity Secretary of the party in the state, Abiodun Salami, said the party was pained at the passage of Mr Aiyeola.

He described the deceased as a committed and loyal party man who did his best to impact on his constituency.

“This is a great loss.

“In fact, we have lost a rare gem. He was a loyal and committed member who never did anything outside of the wishes of his people and the party.

“The confidence in him by people of his constituency earned him a ticket to represent them again in 2019 and that he was leader of the Lagos caucus showed the trust the party and colleagues had in him.

“We will sorely miss the departure of this perfect gentleman and a legislator par excellence,” he said.

US Will Soon Give Atiku Visa - Keyamo

The Director , Strategic Communications , President Muhammadu Buhari Campaign Organisation, Mr . Festus Keyamo ( SAN ), says the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party , Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, may soon be given a United States visa because he is a candidate for the Presidency .

Keyamo said this in a statement on Sunday while reacting to allegations levelled against his principal by Atiku ’ s campaign team .

He said US Congress in a report titled, ‘ Keeping foreign corruption out of the US ’ , featured Atiku as one of the four notorious cases of money laundering in the world !

The senior advocate said, “Atiku ’ s co-conspirators , Williams Jefferson and Siemens in the bribery deal were convicted and Jefferson went to jail. By running for President of Nigeria , Atiku intends to get some immunity from prosecution .

“Already he is hoping to obtain a visa to visit the US , as a guest of the State Department, a concession that the US will grant to a Presidential candidate of Africa’ s biggest nation .”

He said the congress report noted that Jennifer Douglas Abubakar, a US citizen , who is the fourth wife of Atiku , from 2000 to 2008, helped her husband bring over $ 40 m in suspect funds into the US including at least $ 1 .7m in bribe payments from Siemens AG , a German corporation, and over $ 38 m from little known offshore corporations .

Keyamo said rather than answer to the allegations , Atiku a few days ago , called President Muhammadu Buhari over certain allegations of “corrupt practices ” which the President allegedly condones in his government .

The senior advocate said the US Department of Justice ’ s claim that Atiku was not under investigation did not exonerate the former Vice - President .

He added , “How do we as a nation end up with anyone with this sordid record locally and internationally ?

 We have heard the lame defence that the US Justice Department said it has no pending case against Atiku Abubakar. That is only a defence for the ignorant ones .

“In the US , there are indictments the Justice Department can confirm to the world. But there is another category of indictments known as sealed indictments that the Justice Department cannot confirm to anyone. These indictments are sealed under the orders of a Judge.

“Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has a sealed indictment waiting for him in the US .

 The day he visits the US , not as a candidate in an election , he will face charges .”

Bandits Kill Soldiers In Zamfara

Suspected bandits have killed an unspecified number of soldiers at a forest in Doburu in the Zurmi Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

An online news portal, The Cable, quoted a military source as disclosing this on Saturday, saying many of his colleagues sustained injuries in the incident.

He said some of the injured persons were receiving treatment at Zurmi General Hospital.

The source said the officer who led troops into the forest was captured by the bandits.

“We ran into an ambush in the forest today. The bandits opened fire on us and we responded but they surrounded us from different directions. They had bombs and sophisticated weapons,” he said.

The “hunger” by Nigerians today is caused by the havoc wreaked on the nation’s economy by the previous administrations of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has said.

“They said you are hungry,” Rotimi Amaechi, the Minister of Transportation, said on Friday in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, during the flag-off of the APC election campaign.

“You are hungry because they stole the money. If the money was here, you wouldn’t have been hungry.”

Mr Amaechi, a former governor of Rivers is the director general of President Muhammadu Buhari re-election campaign.

Mr Buhari, accompanied by the APC national chairman, Adams Oshiomhole; a national leader of the party, Bola Tinubu, and some of the APC governors, was in Uyo to flag off the party’s campaign for the 2019 general elections.

Mr Buhari is seeking a second term in office.

Mr Amaechi said corruption is one of Nigeria’s major problem, and that Mr Buhari was not giving up on the anti-corruption fight.

“We got in and saw the challenges.

 We never knew they had stolen all the money. We thought they had a conscience to leave some money behind.

“You know, the difference between us and the other party (PDP) is that they are not saying that they are not corrupt,” the minister said

“They say we are corrupt, but APC is also corrupt. They agree that the president is not corrupt. What they are saying is those around the president are corrupt. But they agree that they are corrupt.

“We are saying as APC that we are not corrupt and that we are fighting corruption. Whether you are APC or PDP, when you are corrupt we will fight you.”

He cautioned Nigerians against voting for PDP in the 2019 elections.

“If you vote for the other party, let me tell you what will happen. They are so hungry that if they come out, they will be too busy stealing money that by the time Nigerians realise it, we are back to recession.”

Mr Amaechi said President Buhari did not promise to make the value of naira equal to a dollar, nor promised to reduce the price of petrol.

“Anybody who said we promised one naira will be to one dollar must be a magician. Anybody who said we promised we were going to bring down fuel price must also be a magician.

“We are not voodoo economists,” he said.

The minister added, “When we got in, we were mindful of the promises that we made. So, the president gave all us who were in the cabinet challenges to ensure that we rescue this country.

“We commenced activities believing that Nigerians would know that change doesn’t come that easily.

 Even as ministers we feel the pain of change. We know that when you want to make any change you must realise that it will come with some pain.

“We are here asking you to learn the fact that we need another chance to complete the assignment you have given to us. And we will complete it as soon as you give us that chance to come back.”

This is not the first time the ruling party will be blaming the PDP for the woes of the nation.

But ironically, many of the current APC leaders, including Mr Amaechi, were the ones running the past PDP-led administrations in the country.

During the event, the APC handed over flags to its governorship candidates in the South-south region.

We Are In Control Of Baga - Army

The Army declared yesterday that it never lost control of Baga in northern Borno, dismissing reports that Boko Haram insurgents overran the area.
The Chief of Training and Operations, Maj.-Gen. Lamidi Adeosun, told reporters in Maiduguri that troops successfully repelled an insurgents’ attack and secured Baga and its environs.

“Baga, as I speak with you, is not in the hands of Boko Haram insurgents. They contested it, but lost the battle in the last 24 hours of attacks on our base,” he said.

He added: “We have taken control of Baga. I am talking about the position of Baga as at yesterday when we stabilised the situation.

”Our troops have taken control of Baga town and its environs.”

But The Nation confirmed that hundreds of Baga residents including women and children have fled in droves to Maiduguri following the battle in the town.

It was also gathered that road transport fares from Baga to Maiduguri have been hiked by more than 50% following the development.
It now costs a minimum of N10000 per head.

Some earlier reports said Boko Haram insurgents had overrun the fishing town on Nigeria’s border with Chad and Niger Republics, and hoisted their flags, a situation which forced the inhabitants to flee.

Army spokesman Brig. Gen. Sani Kukasheka Usman, said the insurgents on Wednesday Dec. 26, 2018; attacked the 7 Brigade, Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), based in the town at about 7:00 pm.

“The troops along with their Nigerian Navy counterparts put up a very determined fight to repel the attack throughout the night, while Sector 3 Operation LAFIYA DOLE sent in reinforcement who are in hot pursuit of the terrorists.

“Similarly, a Search and Rescue team has been constituted.

“The Nigerian Air Force component has also been mobilised and are engaging the fleeing terrorists. Unfortunately; a naval personnel was killed in action.”

Don't Allow PDP To Return To Power - Amaechi Begs Nigerians

Earlier, the Director General of the APC Presidential Campaign Committee,Mr. Chibuike Amaechi said the Buhari administration would not deviate from its focus on rebuilding the economy,providing security and fighting corruption.

He said: “We promised just three things – we promised to rescue the economy, we promised to enhance security and we promised to fight corruption, those were just the three things that we promised; anybody who says that we promised that one Naira will be one dollar is a magician, anybody who said we promised that fuel prices will fall must also be a magician.

“We are not voodoo economists, we were very clear about what was to be done; we got in and saw the challenges, we never knew they had stolen all the money.

“The World Bank said we would not come out of the recession in three years but we came out of the recession in ten months,” he said adding that the government is also fighting corruption.

“If you vote for the other party, let me tell you, they will be too busy stealing money that by the time Nigerians realize it, we would be back to a recession,” Amaechi stated while urging Nigerians to join hands with APC in ensuring that PDP does not return to power again.

In his own speech, former governor of Akwa Ibom state, Obong Godswill Akpabio who was described as “an uncommon defector” noted that the 2019 election would present a great contrast between President Buhari’s integrity and what others are offering the nation.

Oshiomhole later presented the APC flag to the party’s governorship candidates in the South South.

They are Mr Nsima Ekere, Akwa Ibom; Sen. John Enoh (Cross River); Chief Great Ogboru (Delta);and Mr Tonye Cole ( Rivers State).

Supporting Buhari Has Not Been Rewarding - Kenneth Okonkwo Cries Out

Nollywood actor, Kenneth Okonkwo who recently joined politics has lamented that despite his support for President Muhammadu Buhari that earned him backlash from his people, he has not gotten anything in return. He condemned the disgraceful manner in which his party, All Progressives Congress, APC disqualified him from the race for APC governorship ticket in Enugu state.

He however reiterated his support for Buhari and all APC candidates in the forthcoming general elections, stating that another four years of Buhari will be a period of good things.

The actor cum politician made these remarks while addressing APC faithfuls who paid him a courtesy call in Enugu yesterday, Thursday 27 December, 2018.

Breaking!!! Boko Haram Captures Baga Town

Reports coming from credible sources indicate that Boko Haram terrorists may
have taken control of Baga town, following series of heated battle with Nigerian soldiers.

PREMIUM TIMES earlier reported how the insurgents attacked a military base in Baga in a night long shootout on Wednesay.

The Nigerian Army confirmed the attack but withheld but said it repelled the terrorists.

The army spokesperson, Sani Usman, a brigadier general, said a reinforcement, earlier deployed to Baga, were in hot pursuit of the insurgents.

Reports coming from military sources reveal, however, that the Boko Haram fighters were not fleeing but still in control of the fallen commercial town as at Thursday night.

“The Boko Haram are in full control of Baga and environs,” one military source said in Maiduguri, highlighting that all the reinforcements sent from neighbouring locations also ran into deadly ambush.

“Reinforcement suffered casualties and had to return.

“All the reinforcement from Baga have been met with ambushes at Cross Kauwa, 30kms to Baga.

“So far, the Brigade Commander, 3 officers and 21 soldiers have arrived Monguno as at 4pm.

“More escaping soldiers are still being expected and some others who survived with serious injuries were reported to have been moved to Maiduguri by civilians.”

The source said the insurgents seemed to be in control of the area as they continued to carry out coordinated ambushes to foil all the reinforced deployment of troops.

“Even the Civillian JTF from Maiduguri and Gubio who tried to bypass Cross Kauwa to go through Gudumbali (west of Baga) were equally ambushed and had to retreat,” said the source.

“It was also disclosed that the Boko Haram fighters were reported to have addressed the civilians left in Baga town, warning them of the evil fate of saboteurs.

“Meanwhile, the strategic and highly valued multi barrel rocket launcher (MBRL) amongst other equipment is reported to have been captured by the Boko Haram,” the source said.

Buhari Will Win 2019 Presidential Election Convincingly - Oshiomhole

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress , Adams Oshiomhole , has expressed optimism that his party will win the 2019 presidential election convincingly .

The News Agency of Nigeria reported that Oshiomhole spoke with State House correspondents after a meeting he had with Vice - President Yemi Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa , Abuja, on Thursday .

The APC chairman said the opposition Peoples Democratic Party was not an option.

He claimed that Nigerians are not ready to vote for the PDP again.

He said , “PDP is just not an option; particularly when their candidate is not a new face ; there is no basis for benefit of the doubt .

“You can give benefit of the doubt to a stranger , not to someone who was at the heart ; perhaps one of most powerful vice presidents we have ever had.

“So , I am clear that Nigerians will not have any basis to give PDP the benefit of the doubt . ”

He said the PDP wanted to be in power for 60 years but were driven out after 16 years.

According to him , no employer will recall an employee whose job was terminated due to gross misconduct and abuse of office .

The APC national chairman recalled that the PDP National Chairman , Uche Secondus, apologised to Nigerians but Nigerians did not accept the apology .

He added , “I have not heard anybody say they have accepted the apology .

 People that have robbed you ; they don ’ t apologise and say ‘ allow me back to your store room . ’ You don ’ t do that .

“We are certain that even as we cannot talk of any perfect situation, nothing can make Nigerians get so confused as to think that those who mismanaged yesterday and those who were at the heart of that mismanagement can be entrusted with providing leadership for tomorrow .

“I do not think that is a question at all. PDP is out of this calculation as far as I am concerned. ”

Oshiomhole said that all was set for the inauguration of the party ’ s campaign on Friday in Uyo , Akwa Ibom State .

According to him , it will be the President’ s first rally taking place in the South- South which is very significant .

Oshiomhole said from all the feelers from the state , the people were anxious to receive the President and to hear his message.

“We are all in good mood, ” he added .

Police Dismisses 121 Southern Christian Officers Who Absconded

The police have dismissed 121 of at least 167 police officers who absconded from a counterterrorism training facility to avoid deployment against Boko Haram insurgents last week, PREMIUM TIMES can report.

The 121 officers of the police rank-and-file were accused of committing mutiny and desertion, prompting Inspector-General Ibrahim Idris to order their dismissal with immediate effect.

A directive has gone out for several police units where the dismissed officers were attached to immediately retrieve all police equipment in their possession and remove them from payrolls, according to a December 26 signal seen by PREMIUM TIMES.

The mass dismissal comes a day after PREMIUM TIMES broke the news of the large-scale desertion, eliciting renewed nationwide concerns about Nigeria’s progress in the Boko Haram war, which is now entering its tenth year.

The 167 police officers whom PREMIUM TIMES confirmed as having absconded were amongst the 2,000 sent on a counter-insurgency training at the Nigerian Army Special Forces Training School in Buni Yadi, Yobe State.

Scores of them disappeared after learning that they would be deployed in active combat against Boko Haram in communities where the insurgents are still virulent, as against relatively peaceful settlements like Maiduguri metro area.

They were then declared wanted, amidst fears that they could be harmful because they did not submit the arms, ammunition and other police equipment in their possession before fleeing.

The police had in their first reaction on Wednesday night strongly denied that the officers absconded as reported by PREMIUM TIMES, with their spokesperson Jimoh Moshood saying from the Force Headquarters that the 2,000 officers were still in the training centre ready for deployment against Boko Haram thugs.

The signals detailing the mass dismissal, which were authenticated by police chiefs at the top command, surfaced while the Nigerian Army contradicted the police’s claim that officers did not abscond.

Fulani Herdsmen Kill Five In Plateau As Miyetti Allah Endorses Buhari

At least five people were killed by gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen in a Plateau community on Wednesday, the police have said.

The attack occurred in Rawuru village of Fan District in Barikin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau STate

Two other people were injured in the attack said to be targeted at people returning from a party at about 9 p.m.

The Plateau police spokesperson, Tyopev Terna, said the victims were attacked while returning from a birthday party in Pugu Village.

“On the 27/12/2018 at about 0800hrs the Plateau State Police Command received information from Kim Timothy, the Youth Leader of Rawuru Village, Fan District in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.

“That on the 26/12/2018 at about 2115hrs some unknown gunmen attacked some people when they were returning from a birthday party from Pugu Village.

“As a result of the attack, five people were killed and two were injured,” the spokesperson said.

He said the dead have been buried while the two injured are currently receiving treatment at the General Hospital, Barkin Ladi. The police also pledged to investigate the incident and apprehend the culprits.

Barkin Ladi is one of the communities in Plateau State that have suffered from repeated violence often between herders and farming communities. The violence sometimes takes ethnic and religious forms.

The attack occurred despite the police in Plateau deploying over 2,000 officers to maintain peace in the state during the Christmas season.

Buhari Blames Nigerian System For His Shortcomings

It’s Not Baba That’s Slow In Fighting Corruption, Rather, It’s The Nigerian System, Says Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari says his administration is slow in fighting corruption because the system is slow .

The President said this when he received the Federal Capital Territory community , who paid him Christmas homage at his official residence in Abuja , on Tuesday.

President Buhari , who apparently was reacting to those allegedly accusing his administration of being too slow in tackling the nation ’ s challenges , including endemic corruption, said: “It’ s not Baba ( Buhari ) that is slow , but it is the system.

“So , I am going by this system and I hope we will make it . ”

The President announced that he would soon embark on aggressive campaign for the 2019 Presidential Election , saying that the campaign would start with visits to each of the six geo - political zones of the country .

According to him , the three areas of focus with which he campaigned in 2015 are still very relevant today, adding that he will continue to focus on the fight against corruption, tackling insecurity and improving the economy.

“We are watching the Independent National Electoral Commission very seriously and we are going out very soon ; we will go from geo - political zone to geo- political zone , to remind the people of our promises in 2015 .

“These three fundamental things include security, because you have to secure the country before you can govern it and talking about what we have done regarding securing the country , the people of the North - East know better.

“The three fundamental things we campaigned with are still very relevant.

“On improving the economy , which we are still going to explore, we have done well in agriculture , and those who embraced farming are not regretting it and we have also addressed unemployment and we are very lucky . Through that , we are now attaining food security.

“The third thing with which we will campaign is the issue of corruption.

“I told you what I did when I was in uniform but now when I have to go by this system ( Democracy , ) where people have to be arrested and then prosecuted, taken to court and then with evidence , we will collect back what they had taken illegally and for doing that , people are calling me Baba go slow .

“I am going slowly; but whatever the case, I will not stop pointing fingers at those who have abused trust by taking money that does not belong to them .

I Spoke With Sakaba's Sister Not Wife - Atiku

Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has spoken on the controversy surrounding his communication with the family of Ibrahim Sakaba, a lieutenant colonel of the Nigerian army, killed by Boko Haram in Borno state.

Sakaba was one of the 44 soldiers killed by Boko Haram insurgents during an attack on 157 task force battalion in Metele, Borno.

Tweeting via @Atiku, his verified handle, the presidential candidate had said he condoled with the widow of the deceased on the phone.

But in an interview with PUNCH, the widow said she never received any call from Atiku.

“Why the lies? I have not received any call from Atiku please,” she was quoted to have said.

Following the criticism which trailed the woman’s comment, Atiku issued a statement, saying he spoke with the sister, not wife of Sakaba.

“Following the death of Lt. Col Ibrahim Sakaba during the Boko Haram insurgents’ attack on 157 Taskforce Battalion in Metele, His Excellency Atiku Abubakar’s staff has made efforts to get the contact of his widow to enable the former Vice President express his condolences over the loss of the fallen hero,” the statement read.

“Over the weekend, Atiku Abubakar was availed with phone numbers of Mrs. Sakaba and Maryam, younger sister of the late soldier, in the alternative.

“On Sunday, the former Vice President tried albeit unsuccessfully to contact Mrs. Sakaba but was able to eventually speak with Maryam, younger sister of the gallant soldier during which he expressed his deepest condolences to the family.

“However, this communication was erroneously communicated. The error is regretted. Atiku Abubakar, however reaffirms his deepest condolences to the Sakaba family, which sacrifices, like those of their brave son, keeps us safe.”

Exclusive Reports has it that Akwa Ibom State is launching the first state owned airline with Three modern aircrafts. The fuel efficient CRJ900 series each of which can seat 78 to 90 passengers.

The aircrafts will be arriving Nigeria on or before Christmas. The State governor has announced that the Ibom Air will lunch scheduled commercial passenger services before the end of 2018.

Akwa Ibom state currently runs the only state owned airport with a category 2 runway in Nigeria. The airport runway is capable of handling the biggest aircraft in the world. And currently a second runway is under construction.
